It was the first day of our October break and the kids were begging to have a picnic at the school playground. They wanted to ride their bikes so I decided to pack up our stuff and follow them on the quad. I had Riggy strapped to the front of me in the baby bjorn and put our picnic stuff in a bag hanging on the handle bars. I had the thought that I should bring a rope in case the kids got tired of riding their bikes. I could use the rope to tie down the bikes to the back of the quad. The only rope I could find was Brett's lead rope for the horse. I hooked the reins around the handle bars and we were on our way. I was putting along after the kids when the garage door opener that I had brought fell. I had to back up the quad and pick it up. I told the kids to keep riding and we would be right behind them. We were almost up to the kids when all of a sudden I felt a yank and the next thing I know Rig and I are being tossed from the quad. My only thought was protect rig do I kind of barreled around him. We landed hard on the street asphalt and rig immediately began screaming. I was so confused and shocked as to what had just happened. A few neighbor people came out to see what had happened. Two of the guys called 911 while I was trying to calm rig down. He wasn't bleeding and hadn't lost consciencness so it was a good thing he was crying. His fingers were a little scraped but that was all I could see. I was bleeding down my leg and arms so I had taken the brunt of the fall...thank goodness! When the ambulance arrived they immediately began checking rig. They recommended that I get checked out at the hospital but there was no way I was leaving my baby. So signed a paper denying treatment. Rig seemed to be completely fine (besides the screaming) but they still felt he needed to be air vacced to the valley. What?! Air vacced! Payson's ER doesn't have pediatric care so it's protocol to air vac all children to Phoenix Children's hospital. That's when I started to get a little panicky. I was trying to get a hold of Brett but he wasn't answering his phone and once I got in the ambulance I lost reception. I did however relay to Kelly at the front desk that there had been a quad accident and we were headed to the hospital. The kids were so scared and had no idea what was happening. We all rode to the hospital in the ambulance and when they opened the doors there was Brett standing waiting for us. The helicopter was running and waiting but we were told we couldn't ride in it with him. Rig would be going alone because that's all the room they had. I was beside myself. My screaming baby was going to have to travel all by himself with complete strangers poking and prodding him. I felt sick to my stomach. He was strapped to a gurney and they took off for Phoenix. Brett and I jumped in his truck to run home and grab some things and head to the hospital. Thankfully Bob and Terri just happen to be at the Phoenix Temple Open house when Brett called to tell them what had happened. They rushed over to the hospital just in time to see the helicopter land. They didn't get to see him right away but when they finally did Rig was so happy to see them. He stuck his arms out to grandpa and after a priesthood blessing was his normal, happy self again. Brett, the kids and I drive down as quickly as we could. I think the adrenaline finally calmed down because I suddenly felt how much body hurt. I knew I had done some thing to my left wrist because it was throbbing and I was unable to move or pick up with that left hand. I was a reck with blood coming from my knees, ankles, elbows and my left calf looked like hamburger meat. We finally got the hospital and to Rig's room where he was asleep on grandpa's chest. Bob and Terri told us that Rig had gone through a thorough exam and X-rays and seemed to be just fine. Hallelujah!!! I was so happy to know he was ok. He was pretty happy to see us when he woke up. Rig was discharged from the hospital so we headed to bob and Terri's so I could clean up. Let me just say I have never had a more painful bath in all my life. I had so much road rash that everything just burned when water touched it. Brett had to scrub my cuts to make sure they were all clean from gavel and asphalt. It hurt like nothing else. I can't imagine the torture burn victims go through. I'm pretty sure I would die if I had to bare that. We drove home that evening and the next morning I had an appt with Dr. Mike Darnell to check my wrist. I ended up fracturing my left wrist but becuse of all my road rash he couldn't hard cast me. He gave me a removable splint brace to mobilize my wrist. I could shower with it and everything. By far, the road rash was the worst part of it all but I feel very lucky that things weren't worse. From what we have gathered the rope was the cause of the accident. With part of it tied on to the handle bar the other part began to drag behind us, got caught in the wheel and locked the tire up. The steering wheel was yanked hard to the right which caused it to flip. I ended up being cited by the investigative officer for not having a helmet on rig. We also just got the bill for the helicopter ride and we about had a heart attack. Nearly $45,000!!! We will have to see what insurance will cover. It definitely was one of our most scary days to date but we are thankful everyone is ok.
