In the truck on the way to Girl's Camp
Who says you stop going to Girl's Camp after being a YCL? I am so excited that my calling is in the Young Women's because I got to go to Camp LoMia as a 4th Year leader. Tuesday I woke up around 4am and it felt like Christmas morning because I couldn't stop thinking about how much fun I was going to have with my girls. This year's theme was "Once Upon a Princess" and each ward had it's own Kingdom name. Our Ward was Celebration Nation. The 4th Years were designated as the "Royal PAINS (Princesses Are interested in Nurturing Sisterhood". We met at the Stake Center at 6:30am, jumped in my truck and headed to Blue Ridge Resevoir for a day of canoeing. It was beautiful and the girls had so much fun learning how to "swamp" a canoe and get back in. We got back to camp that afternoon, showered and had some fun down at main camp.
The next day we headed off to repelling. I have never been repelling, but it sure sounded like a lot of fun. It was said that going "Aussie" style was much easier, but a little more scary at first. I decided to take the challenge and got geared up. I got my feet over the ledge and began to slowly lower myself so I was perpendicular with the mountain. It was an extremely intense feeling as I am looking at the ground way, way below. I was given the okay to take a step and I pretty much don't remember what all happened after that because it went so quickly. Apparently, when I took a step my feet were no longer spread apart, but were side by side (which is a big no-no in repelling) and I lost my balance and went plummeting sideways into the mountain. The left side of my head/face hit the mountain. I was pulled back up to ground and was told my chin was bleeding. My head was throbbing and all I could feel were little "rocks" in my mouth, which turned out to be pieces of my teeth. I chipped two teeth and gashed my chin...I knew there was a reason why Brett is in Dental school. Luckily, a little ibprofen and a bandaid got me back into the harness and this time I repelled down the mountain "regular" style. I am so glad I can say that I have repelled. I just don't think it's going to become a hobby.
That night was skit night and everyone did these really cute "Once Upon a Time" skits about princesses. Well, our ward decided to do something a little different, so all the girls learned the dance to Napoleon Dynamite. They all wore white shirts that said "Vote for Pres. Thornock". The girls did awesome.
Thursday was our hike day and we headed to Fossil Springs. It was such a beautiful hike and the end was definately well worth it. There was this big waterfall pouring into a body of water. The water was so clear and the girls had so much fun swimming in it. Unfortunately, a girl from another ward gashed her head open when she jumped off a cliff into the water and ended up with 8 stitches. I guess us 4th years were a little unlucky when it came to making it out each day injury-free.
That night we had testimony meeting with our ward and the spirit was so strong. I can't think of any better girls to spend Girl's Camp with. They were all so fun to be around, so loving to each other and always so Christ-like. I hope I have daughters just like them. Hopefully, I will have the opportunity to go back next year because I would go in a heart beat.

You have had some busy times lately. What a blast. I have never been to girls camp once in my life. I was baptized at 14 almost 15 and never went. It is something I look forward to. What cute girls. Cute pictures :)
I am so jealous you got to go to Girls Camp. I have always wanted to go as a leader or Cabin mom. I think it would be a blast. Whoever told you to go aussie style on your first time rappelling was mistaken. I started rappelling when I was like 5 cuz my Dad had all the gear and was way into it and would always take the ward kids out. I still prefer to not got aussie and you are more likely to face plant or side plant into the mountain. At least that is my opinion. It looks like you guys had a blast though and I bet you were one of the "cool" leaders we all wanted to be around when at camp. I still remember which of my leaders we all clung to.
Looks like so much fun, I'm getting excited to go! So I want to know why we don't get to see the "little rocks" in your mouth! Oh man, I bet that hurt!! Let's plan on Tuesday!
WoW! Those pictures made me so sad...in a jealous good kind of way. I'm so glad the girls have such amazing leaders...it makes looking at those photos a tiny bit easier!
Cute, cute pics. Don't be surprised when I steal some of them for my blog. Thank you so much for being so wonderful. The girls love you and so do I. You are an amazing leader and I am so blessed to be able to work with you!
I hope you don't think I'm a weirdo but I'm Marie's aunt and I live in the stake just east of yours. We were in your stake for 8 years and I knew Marie went to camp last week, so when you posted on Marie's blog I jumped over to look at camp pictures. I looked at your earlier post and I said out-loud "your mom is Debbie Kartchner". I grew up with your mom's family. Your mom and my sister Marianne are the same age. Your mom looks great!!! Your right, she is beautiful. The first time I went to Hawaii - 34 years ago in July, I saw your mom at a park there. She and your dad were stationed there I think, and it was one of those moments I will always remember. I also know your in-laws. Terry was the very best Primary President I have ever known. Sorry to barge in, but please tell your family hi for me (Ok, you probably still think I'm a weirdo!!!)

Oh I'm so jelous! I want to be in YW so bad just to be able to go to girls camp! And camp Lomiha is the best ever! I bet your girls love having you there. So fun!
Man I am so sad I didn't get to go this year! I love YW and camp. You are such a great leader to those girls they really look up to you. Sorry about the repelling, I have not ever done it but I would have laughed at Bro McDowell if he told me that was the easier way to go!!! How scary at least you still have your teeth in your head!
Oh how fun! I am super jealous! I have always wanted a calling in young womens! You guys have a huge young womens group also! We seriously have 5 young women in our entire ward and two of them just graduated! Kind of crazy!
Well.. I just read all of these other posts and.. they pretty much all said what I was going to say.. "Looks like fun!" I wanted to check and see if you guys are going up to Pinetop for the 4th.. theres a rodeo in Snowflake on that Saturday just wanted to see if you guys wanted to join us :) Anyway let me know.
Well Sister Flaherty, you are a trooper!! Aussie style, huh? You are brave! I could never! I miss girls camp and I bet that would be such a fun calling. I'm sure your girls absolutely love you.
Is it really possible to look that good when your camping?...You looked great and I'm so sorry about your repelling incident, I've done it once and it scares me to death! Your stake sounds like they really know how to put on a fun girls camp!
So how are the teeth. Did Brett get you all fixed up? I knew he was going to be good for something. Just kidding. Well, see you Friday at the slumber party. You are going right?
Just let me know if you guys get to come up.. I really think our boys should get use to the Mutton BUsting since they will be doing it at 3.. Maybe 4. I was just watching some children doing it on Youtube and I was laughing the whole time. So fun!
Looks like you had a great time. That stinks that you chipped your tooth when rappelling, good thing your husbands going to be a dentist! I love all the pictures.
Oh Donnie...you poor thing!! Which teeth did you chip?? Repelling is scary!! You are so BRAVE to get right back up & go down the mountain again!! I bet your YW LOVE you!!!
Oh & thanks for you sweet comments on my blog!
Girls camp sounds like it was really a fun adventure! It really brings back so many memories of being in YW (well when I went anyway lol). Let's plan on hanging out next week. Maybe monday night? Let mek know if that works for you. Have fun this weekend!
It was fun seeing and hanging with you guys again. We'll have to do it sooner than later! You look like you had a blast at camp...minus the near death experience!! And what the crap, you look perfect with NO makeup on!
Donnie-
I have thought about you alot actually since you wrote on my blog but havent got around to writing you back. Partly, because what I want to say is not any of my business but if you ever decide you can or want to do in vitro my Dr. really is the best in the country. No really he studied and invented the steps. My husband was tested and he was great and I was tested and I seemed to be fine myself...leaving us in the 'unknown' category (same as you) My Doc says most cases are unknown and thats why he preps the crap out of you and once youre pregnant you have to take all kinds of shots to make sure it stays. His success rate is phenomenal!! Truly it is! People fly in all over the country... I have helped alot of people get pregnant through him. If youre interested in Info I will send you am email if you like??? So I'd need your email address. It will probably be a forwarded email from a few other girls I sent to just because its easier and the same information.
Also, your dad is amazing. He knows my sister Rachel Hatch (they live in Pine Top) and he was in the hospital, in Feb, when she delivered her last baby and he also did all her ultrasounds with her first baby 8 years ago in Mesa. My sis said he was able to find things other doctors couldn't. My mom was there for the latest birth and your dad shared with them your experience about getting Bradocks (sp) and it topuched her so much she's been wanting to write to you about how neat she thinks it is and what a great dad you have. I thought that was sweet- Let me know if I can do anything or get you in touch with my Dr. He's a good friend and he'll do a phone consult with you for free if I talk to him about ya!!
*TRULY
so fun! :)
